                                                                The Importance of Teachers

Everyone one of us has a teacher that has made a difference in our lives. The person that we will never forget for one reason or another. The one that believed in us and made us feel good about ourselves. I spent my elementary, middle and high school in a private Catholic school. I had many teachers who I adored and some that looking back, viewed it as just a job. But one teacher always stood out because not only was she knowledgeable, but she was sweet and kind and people always wanted to be around her. She was a nun and although she is deceased now, she will never be forgotten. She was a treasure!

Anita spoke about keeping students for three years in a row and how this can make a difference with an effective teacher. I teach in a public Montessori school and we keep our students for three years. This time with the children is really helpful for the students and for the teacher. Relationships and bonds have developed The children feel very safe as they know their classroom and their teacher or teachers.

It was such a pleasure to work with three year olds and see them blossom as the years go by. With our prepared environment, everything is tailored for the children and they do get that sense of belonging. We call this "Children's House" and we all seem like family. It shows the children a great sense of community. Although I am sad to see them leave me after three years, I know that I have given them a strong foundation to continue on their educational journey.

It really does make a difference when a teacher believes in you. When the teacher that I spoke about earlier believed in me, it made all the difference in the world and I appreciated that. She always had kind words to say about me which was always very encouraging. As teachers, we create safe environments, teach our students how to be a friend, and treat them with respect.

  1. Deanne I love what you wrote here about the importance of teachers here. I think it's great that you get to spend three years with your students. I went to public school growing up and there are two teachers that I will remember for the rest of my life. Their caring, sensitive, and engaging classroom attitude really had an impact on my life. It is so important to believe in our students and treat them with respect. Well said.

  2. In your opening statement I had someone in my mind the entire time. Great way to make a connection to teacher in the past, present, and ones coming in the future. I also loved how you got personal and told us about an important teacher to you. Also great reference to Anita's podcast! I couldn't agree more with your conclusion. Children need everyone to believe in them to succeed, not just us but we surely make a difference!
